Outside incidence on expectations.

In the book "Motivation and emotion" by Johnmarshall Reeve, on chapter nine, in one of the paragraphs he refers to the expectations. This expectations can be consider as predictions of the future of something that can potentially happen.

In other words, how we anticipate the events and possible probabilities of result.
The following paragraph is a quote from the book previously mention:

"To anticipate events and results, people depends on their passed experiences and personal resources to make forecasts of what to expect on the future and how cope what lies ahead". (Reeve,J.2010).

With this in mind, is possible to deduce that individuals will have certain expectations that come from the empírea or experience and also some perceptions prior learning or mental structures, that will allow to make a prediction before the event occurs. This will at the same time create a motivation that according to the expectation will trigger the action or not.

But, with a further analyze of the issue, it's possible to conclude that not only the experience and other personal elements of the individual will be fundamental in this prediction. There are outside elements and variables that can influence in the expectation of the subject, such as other individuals, authority figures or even a condition that will provoke a modification or even a whole new subjective prediction of the event.

By way of example, imagine a child that has very little experience in the world or a specific subject, for this very reason ignores the possible scenarios that could potentially occur. The child can't rely on past experiences, because he hasn't had any, neither other personal resources. But the outside can interact with the child as mention before, imagine some other individual has experienced what the child hasn't, the "outsider" can give the child some advice about it. This way the child can rely on the subjective experience of the other, in order to create a prediction or expectation. Like this, the interaction of an individual with the outside can change or create a subjective and even in some cases biased expectation.

In conclusion, when individuals anticipate events and results, they don't only depend on the personal subjective experiences and resources to make forecasts of what to expect on the future, they also rely on others subjective experiences and resources from the outside. People are attached to a context, so even sometimes this inevitable.
This can cause a different performance on the action when the expectations of the individuals are influenced by others, having a positive or negative impact, as well as conditions such as depression. Or even a authority figure can undermine through persuasion the intrinsic motivation or change the past experience of the subject.

  1. This is pretty interesting. I wonder which one goes first: motivation or emotion? The approach will tell you which one I guess...
